about

I commute to work on the train. On the way home I'm usually daydreaming about stuff that's pretty mundane by song standards: having dinner with my wife, hugging my dog, watching TV on the couch together. But to me it's the best part of the day. So I wanted to write something that celebrates these tiny moments that make life wonderful.

lyrics

On my way back home
on a commuter train, en route.
Wishing I could spend less time on this damn thing
and more time with you.

Looking out the window
I watch the grass turn to brush in time.
The overpass passes by too quickly
to read the graffiti on its side.

Can we capture some extra time?
Take an hour or two
before our calendar, as over developed as this island,
leaves us no room.

I'm still singing about the same thing
I wrote back in '08:
that no passion or interest glows as brightly
as time with you today.

So I daydream a few more stops
of what may seem mundane to write.
But these tiny moments bring out the color
in this life that we've outlined.

Maybe it's not cinematic
to wish for something so small.
An orchestral swell never hits as well
as the sound of your voice down the hall.

The train pulls in
and I let you know that
I'm on my way home to you.
In a minor routine you're a major key,
the song that gets me through.
