One of Two Ways

from Terra Firma by Our Twilight Pastime

about

One of Two Ways is a softie. I wrote it in the summer of 2005. If 1 x 1 is the kid everyone loves, but secretly you want to punch him in the face, then One of Two Ways is the kid who DOES get punched in the face, and then goes home to write about it in his journal.

Basically, it's a slow, sad song is what I'm saying.

I'll still play it every once in a great while if I'm at a coffee shop, but since I'm mostly at bars nowadays, it's remained in the archive.

lyrics

I’ve got these hopes I save
a little at a time,
like change in a bank,
until it feels just right;
then I grab my collection,
come over,
and ask you what I should do.

You say: "a dream
is only conquered one of two ways:
it’s either shattered on the ground,
or safely stored away;
and I can tell
by looking at this one
that this one
has got to die."

But instead,
I grab my coins and run to the fountain—-
I’m gonna wish
until I’m poor on the streets
for better care than sick room air
for all my dying hopes and dreams.

I’ll show them love,
even though they teased me my whole life
(I’ve gotta push and pull).
I’ll show them love,
even though they teased me my whole life.
I’ve gotta push and pull,
‘cause they’re too beautiful,
this one’s too beautiful,
to let die.
